What Is Supervised Visitation?

Parent and children engaged in warm family activities during a supervised visit

Supervised visitation is a court-ordered service that allows a parent to spend time with their child in the presence of a trained, neutral third-party monitor. It is designed to ensure the physical and emotional safety of the child during visits, while still preserving and supporting the parent-child relationship in a structured, professional environment.

Courts order supervised visitation in a variety of circumstances — including situations involving domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health concerns, or extended periods of separation. The goal is never to punish a parent, but to protect the child while allowing the relationship to continue under appropriate oversight.

Uniform Standards of Practice for Supervised Visitation

California Standard 5.20

All supervised visitation services provided by Douglas Retig, M.Ed are conducted in full compliance with California Standard 5.20 — the Uniform Standards of Practice for Supervised Visitation. These standards were established by the California Rules of Court to ensure consistent, professional, and child-centered practices across all supervised visitation providers in the state.

Standard 5.20 governs how visits are scheduled, conducted, documented, and reported. It requires providers to maintain strict neutrality, keep detailed records, and prioritize the child's best interests at all times. Compliance with these standards is not optional — it is the foundation of every visit Douglas conducts.

How a Supervised Visit Works

1

Court Order & Referral

Supervised visitation typically begins with a court order. An attorney, family law judge, or social worker may refer families to a supervised visitation provider. Douglas works with attorneys, courts, and families directly.

2

Initial Consultation

Before visits begin, Douglas conducts an intake process to understand the court order, the needs of the child, and any specific conditions or restrictions. All parties are briefed on the rules and expectations. Both parties will sign a service agreement documenting the rules, regulations, and expectations agreed upon, including fees and responsibility for payment. Medical information for the children is also collected, along with emergency procedures to be followed.

3

The Visit

Visits take place in a safe, neutral environment. Douglas monitors all interactions, ensuring the child's physical and emotional safety throughout. Positive activities, conversation, and engagement are encouraged within the boundaries set by the court.

4

Documentation & Reporting

Every visit is carefully documented. Reports are prepared as required by the court order and Standard 5.20, providing an accurate, objective record of each visit that can be submitted to the court if needed.

Our Commitment to Your Children

Every child who comes through a supervised visit deserves to feel safe, respected, and emotionally supported. Douglas Retig, M.Ed's unique background — as a former elementary and middle school teacher, Bureau Director for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, father, and grandfather — means he brings both professional expertise and genuine human compassion to every visit.
